So funny story…
We were in Japan going through our flight and Airbnb info for our trip to Hong Kong in a few days and when I looked up the address of our house there I realized it was nowhere near where I had been planning. In fact, it was on the complete opposite side on a random island in what looked like the middle of NOWHERE. Heaven knows how such a *minor* *semi-important* detail managed to slip past me when I booked that one, but in my defense I had been in the midst of planning a full month of flights, places to stay, trains, and plans! Priceless. Mase and I looked at each other with wide eyes, burst out laughing, and got psyched to see even more of HK than we’d been expecting.
Little did we know it would become on of our favorite places in all of Asia!
Welcome to Cheung Chau, Hong Kong! It is one of the 234 islands that make up this beautiful country and although it looks far from the other islands on a map, it’s just a quick 40 minute ferry away from Hong Kong Island (where most first time travelers typically spend a majority of their time).
One of my favorite things to do on the island was just walking along the dock where you get off the ferry. There is a cute market set up every day, but it’s got the most things to see on weekends and holidays. There are food stands where you can try all kinds of typical foods like fresh fruit smoothies, rolled ice cream, fresh sea food, curry, fruit shish kabobs, mochis, pastries, you name it! There are also several restaurants that have tables set up along the ocean with the best views.
We stumbled across a small hike that overlooked the ocean and led to a cave at the end with flecks of gold along the ceiling inside. I can’t get over how beautiful this island is! When you get off the ferry, turn right and walk about 20-30 minutes until you see signs at the trailhead. Here is a shot from the lookout spot:
There was also a beautiful temple that we found walking inland through the side streets, maybe a ten minute walk from the pier.
Staying on the island was a nice getaway from the big city side of Hong Kong and makes an amazing day trip. Rent some bikes, do some hiking, and get yourself a huge bowl of crab curry! Do you have more tips to add? Drop them below 🙂
xx
